My passion
for Motown & Northern Soul music
commenced as a young 14year old in the early 1960s.
My mate, David Fletcher & I enjoyed the local youth clubs
during the week. Saturday lunchtime’s was in fact, a good start
to the weekend. We kicked off at the Queens Ballroom in Queens Square,
Wolverhampton UK. The Queen’s displayed some fantastic
Northern Soul & Motown music.
Monday night’s dance was at Wolverhampton Civic Centre, followed
up on Wednesday night at the Wednesfield tube disco. Saturday
night at Top of the World, Stafford, not forgetting the mod hangout
at the Wolverhampton ten pin bowling alley. Night life was excellent
at the club Lafayette on special occasions. Also, the catacomb’s
in Wolverhampton, Lea Manor and finally the Connaught hotel, in
fact, a few years later I was pulling pints there would you believe.
The music at the time was Marvin Gay, Smokey
Robinson and the Supremes, Martha Reeve’s etc, and the
one song that
stuck in my mind thanks to BBC Radio1 and Tony Blackburn was ‘Sanfransico’ by
Scott McKenzie, (My flower-power days revived, years later).
David Fletcher and I drifted apart, he got married and I immigrated
to Australia in July 1970.
Well, I am pleased to say, David and I did meet
up again after twenty five years, in 2001 through a story
that my sister Sandra placed
in Wolverhampton Express & Star newspaper. We now email and/or
phone each other each fortnight and I have lost count
of our reunions since then.
Ttime has moved on for both of us, we are much older and
far wiser. At the time of putting this web history together,
I own and operate a used whitegoods business in Mildura, Victoria,
Australia which I thoroughly enjoy.
I have four grown up children, two boys, Denny 26, Michael
22, and
two girls, Lauren 19 and the baby in the family Kimberly 15.
My involvement with 106.7 HotFM happened roughly two years ago.
It took me nine months to secure a radio time slot which is
still current on Thursday night at 10pm. I am so grateful to station
manager Max Thorburn for giving me this opportunity. |
